L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine (β-hydroxy-γ-trimethylaminobutyric acid) is a quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesized from lysine and methionine in hepatic and renal tissue. It functions as an obligate cofactor for the carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT1/CPT2) enzyme system, which mediates the translocation of long-chain fatty acyl-CoA molecules across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. Researchers use L-Carnitine as a reference biochemical in fatty acid oxidation flux assays, mitochondrial membrane potential studies, and metabolomics experiments examining acylcarnitine profiles. It is also employed in cell culture models studying lipotoxicity and insulin signaling pathway crosstalk. Supplied for in vitro research use only.
